The natural landscape of this site has been protected as the Taisanji Scenic Area, so the area in and around the temple precincts is deeply forested. The area has been selected as one of the top 100 forests of Hyogo Prefecture, and is a well-known for cherry blossoms in the spring and autumn foliage in the fall. According to legend, this ancient temple was founded in the Nara period (710-794) by the eldest son of the prominent Japanese historical figure Fujiwara no Kamatari. The main hall is Kobe’s only designated national treasure – definitely not to be missed. The Niomon Gate and the three-storied pagoda are designated important cultural properties.
