Originally part of the outer moat for Fukuoka Castle, this land in Hakata Bay became a key feature when feudal lord Kuroda Nagamasa built Fukuoka Castle in the late sixteenth century. Later, in 1927, the area was transformed for the Toa Industrial Exhibition, ultimately opening to the public in 1929 as Ohori Park. Nestled almost squarely in the heart of Fukuoka city, the park spans approximately 398,000 square meters, making it one of the nation's largest waterscape parks. The expansive pond, covering around 226,000 square meters, is encircled by a two-kilometer walking path. Ohori Park offers a harmonious blend of natural beauty and recreational facilities, including a forested area for wild birds, a children's playground, a Noh theater, a Japanese-style garden, an island connected by four bridges, the Ukimido Pavilion, and a boathouse. Whether for rest, entertainment, or exercise, Ohori Park stands as a serene oasis in the heart of the city.
